If you ever shopping for a new carpet head for your central vacuum system, you will notice there is quite a selection online. Good thing for you, most central vac carpet heads do the job. It is only in rare cases were a carpet head is a peice of crap. With that said, there are a few things that seperate the good for the best.

First, the belt design. Carpet heads with a "Geared" or a "Serpentine" belt with go much longer between belt changes and will not slow over time. Flat, rubber band type belts strech which makes the brush roller slow down, picking up less dirt. Flat belts also tend to snap easier.

Another area of concern is where the head was made. If made in China, run away! If European or American made, then your in the right spot. European carpet heads made in places such as Italy or Germany tend to last longer and perform better than the rest.

Also, when looking online for a central vacuum carpet head, feel free to call and ask questions. Make sure the nozzle will work on your style carpeting, see if it is good for pet hair etc. The more you ask, the better off you will be.
